Mortgage/rent payments, utilities, childcare and groceries, transportation, car and household repairs, and other "survival" expenses are among items covered. The average grant currently exceeds $1,000. This aid provides a critical bridge to struggling military and veteran families, as the average veteran must wait 14 months for VA medical and financial benefits to process and begin.
Grants to Families: Through this program we provide one-time emergency grants for expenses such as rent/mortgage, utilities, groceries and transportation. The average grant is $1,200. WE HAND EVERY RETURNING SERVICE MEMBER A CHEESEBURGER AND SODA, GREET THEM AND THANK THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE. DURING FY 2017, 143 VOLUNTEERS GREETED 30 RETURNING FLIGHTS WITH 3,000 SERVICE MEMBERS. HELPLINE: OUR HELP LINE ENABLES US TO DIRECT THOSE WHO NEED AND QUALIFY FOR OUR ASSISTANCE TO ONE OF OUR REFERRING PARTNERS AND TO CONNECT OTHER VETERANS TO MORE SUITABLE RESOURCES. IN FY 2017, WE HELPED 1,021 SERVICE MEMBERS AND VETERANS IN THE LATTER CATEGORY. Volunteers from The Home Front Cares meet every plane that arrives in Colorado Springs carrying soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. We hand every returning service member a cheeseburger and soda, greet them and thank them for their service. This program also supports family members to visit wounded loved ones out of state in military hospitals and to attend memorial services, as well as welcoming ceremonies for soldiers and families, unit activities, and other functions that are not readily covered by existing military or nonprofit infrastructure.
