Experienced teachers plan a wide range of active learning activities throughout the curriculum that foster intellectual, emotional and social growth for each individual child, enabled by the student-teacher ratio of only 8:1. There were 832 students enrolled for the school year ended June 30, 2013. The Upper School features an Honors Program, Advanced Placement courses, classes for college credit plus fellowships for independent research projects. The core curriculum is complemented by the Institute for 21st Century Education, an array of centers that allow students to have hands-on, in-depth learning experiences outside the classroom. The Upper School also has interscholastic sports and many student clubs and organizations in addition to active community service and an outstanding fine and performing arts program. The Center for Global Citizenship provides opportunities for HB students to explore an international curriculum and the Worldwide Communication Center's broadcasting studio allows students to connect with other schools around the world. HB is recognized for its Science Research & Engineering Program (SREP), which partners high school girls with professional researchers in real world situations where students work one-on-one with a mentor on science and engineering projects at facilities such as The Cleveland Clinic, Case Western Reserve University, NASA Glenn and others. In the prestigious Intel and Siemens competitions, HB has secured more than 135 finalist or semifinalist rankings since the SREP began in 1998. SREP students have been authors or co-authors on more than 200 technical professional publications. Hathaway Brown School and its students have garnered numerous accolades. The Class of 2013 had 20 students (25% of the Senior class) who earned National Merit or National Achievement Finalist, Semifinalist or Commended Student status. In addition, HB's Math and History Departments have received state and national awards for excellence including placements at Mu Alpha Theta contests. HB's Performing Arts students have claimed top honors at International A Cappella competitions, Thespian & Shakespeare performances, Regional Dance competitions and award-winning performances at the All-State Orchestra and other music festivals. In the last several years, HB athletes have won League Championships in Soccer, Field Hockey, Basketball, Lacrosse, Tennis, Golf, Swimming and Diving; Sectional Championships in Soccer, Field Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, Golf, Softball, Swimming and Diving; District Championships in Soccer, Field Hockey, Basketball, Golf and Tennis; Regional Championships in Soccer, Basketball and Lacrosse; and State Championships in Basketball, Soccer, Field Hockey, Lacrosse, Golf and Tennis. HB's facilities include a 20,000 square foot, world-class Aquatic Center with an 8-lane, 25-yard pool, a separate 12-foot diving well and a shallow instructional area. This natatorium has expanded the curriculum for health and fitness for all grade levels and provides additional opportunities for team and individual sport competitions. HB's course of study is strongly supported by the School's distinguished facilities situated on a 16-acre, beautifully landscaped, suburban campus. These include: a green-house in Primary Science, a woodworking and invention lab for all students, six science laboratories, five computer centers, three state-of-the-art libraries, three art studios and a photography darkroom; plus a dance studio, six tennis courts, three playing fields and a Project Adventure (outdoor) education ropes course. All of which provide a spectacular setting for an extraordinary education.
