ABBE CENTER FOR COMMUNITY CARE, INC. (ACCC) SERVED ROUGHLY 100 INDIVIDUALS WITH CHRONIC MENTAL ILLNESS AND/OR INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES IN FY 2012-2013. 98% ARE ON SOCIAL SECURITY DISABILITY OR INDIGENT. THE SERVICES PROVIDED ASSIST THESE INDIVIDUALS IN TRANSITIONING FROM 24 HOUR CARE TO THE COMMUNITY OR TO REGAIN LOST SKILLS; ALLOWING THEM TO BE AS INDEPENDENT AS POSSIBLE. THE AVAILABILITY OF 24 HOUR CARE SERVICES TO INDIVIDUALS ALLOWS THEM TO LIVE CLOSER TO THEIR NATURAL SUPPORT SYSTEMS, ALLOW THE INDIVIDUAL TO RETURN TO BEING PRODUCTIVE MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY THROUGH EMPLOYMENT OR VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES. ACCC PROVIDES TWO LEVELS OF LICENSED CARE: AS A RESIDENTIAL CARE FACILITY (RCF) AND AS A RESIDENTIAL CARE FACILITY FOR PERSONS WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. ALL INDIVIDUALS ADMITTED TO THE FACILITY ARE SUFFERING FROM A PHYSICIAN DIAGNOSED MENTAL ILLNESS. THE PHYSICIAN MUST ALSO CERTIFY THAT THE CARE PROVIDED IN THE RCF OR THE PMI IS THE NECESSARY LEVEL OF CARE FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL. EXAMPLES OF THE DIAGNOSES TREATED INCLUDE: DEPRESSION, SCHIZOPHRENIA, PERSONALITY DISORDERS, EATING DISORDERS, SEXUAL OFFENDERS AND CO-OCCURRING DISORDERS OF MENTAL ILLNESS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE. WE ALSO TREAT MANY INDIVIDUALS FROM THE COMMUNITY CORRECTION SERVICES. THESE INDIVIDUALS' DISORDERS ARE TREATED THROUGH MEDICATION, INDIVIDUAL AND GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY, EDUCATION, REHABILITATION AND RECREATION MODALITIES. ACCC ALSO HAS APPROXIMATELY 25 VOLUNTEERS AND 11 COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT ASSIST IN PROVIDING NORMALIZATION ACTIVITIES FOR THE RESIDENTS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS HAS DECLINED OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS AS THE ACUITY AND SEVERITY OF THE RESIDENTS' ILLNESSES HAVE INCREASED.ACCC ALSO SERVES AS AN INTERNSHIP AND TRAINING SITE FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA, THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA, MOUNT MERCY COLLEGE, COE COLLEGE AND KIRKWOOD COLLEGE. BOTH UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE PLACEMENTS ARE ACCEPTED FROM THESE UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGES' SCHOOLS OF NURSING, PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIAL WORK AND COUNSELING. ACCC ALSO PROVIDES PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT FOR MANY STUDENTS; PROVIDING THEM WITH INVALUABLE PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE TO SUPPLEMENT THEIR EDUCATIONAL GOALS.
