THE MISSION OF THE TASTE OF THE HAWAIIAN RANGE (TOHR), INC. IS TO PROVIDE AN EDUCATIONAL VENUE TO ENCOURAGE, SUPPORT, AND PROMOTE LOCAL PRODUCTION OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS THROUGH SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND SCIENTIFIC EXCHANGES AND EVENTS. THE TOHR INC SEEKS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF SUPPORTING LOCAL RANCHES AND FARMS, BECAUSE ONE COMPONENT OF GREATER FARM PROFITABILITY IS GREATER DEMAND AND HIGHER PRICES. ON THE ISLAND OF HAWAII, APPROXIMATELY 85% OF LOCALLY CONSUMED FOOD IS IMPORTED, AND RESIDENTS OF HAWAII ISLAND PAY A GREATER PROPORTION OF THEIR INCOME FOR FOOD (22%) COMPARED TO THE U.S. MAINLAND (13%). THERE IS A NEED TO PRODUCE A GREATER PROPORTION OF FOOD LOCALLY FOR GREATER FOOD SECURITY, GREATER NUTRITIONAL QUALITY, AND MORE WHOLESOMENESS.
