Hagley's Research Library responded to 979 onsite researchers in 2016, who visited its reading rooms on 1,667 occasions throughout the year. The Library fielded 4,142 reference requests. The Manuscripts and Archives department handled 2,176 requests, and shared 3,450 linear feet of material with researchers. The Audiovisual Collections and Digital Initiatives (AVD) department answered 1,412 queries and shared 629 collection items. The Published Collections Department served reference on 554 queries, and shared 4,293 rare books, trade catalogues, and other materials from its collections. Online, 8,206 unique visitors used the online catalog 225,135 times, and 40,653 visitors used the online finding aids database 151,627 times. This discovery supported the circulation of 3,450 linear feet of material and 4,922 volumes, and attracted an additional 87,634 visitors to view 801,497 digitized pages of material in the Hagley Digital Archives. More than 1,200 linear feet and 23 GB were arranged, described, and cataloged by Library staff. Thirty-nine collections were added to our collections management database, Archivist's Toolkit. Over 15,200 new catalog records were created. More than 6,700 authority records were created or revised, with over 100 name authority records submitted to the Name Authority Cooperative Organization (NACO). Seventy-two new finding aids were added to the finding aids database. Important work such as this will make discoverable the nearly 345 linear feet of accessions that arrived in 2016, along with 134 published accessions and 25.19 GB of born-digital accessions. The Library produced 4 exhibitions and provided the content and curatorial and conservation support for the Museum's major exhibition, which opened in October 2015, "Driving Desire: Automobile Advertising and the American Dream." The Center for History of Business, Technology and Science funded 40 out of 64 grant applications; hosted its first dissertation fellow as part of its three-year agreement with the University of Virginia Miller Center of Public Affairs; and competed successfully for a NEH grant for support of 2 postdoctoral fellowships. The Center also held four public author talks, which averaged an attendance of over one hundred; held six seminars; maintained two book series with the University of Pennsylvania Press and the Johns Hopkins University Press, which produced two new volumes; and organized the Business History Conference's annual meeting, held in Portland, OR. Our public lectures, conferences, and seminars exposed Hagley to more than 1,059 visitors. Exhibitions, special tours, and events such as Philly Archives Month and our lecture course at the Osher Institute of Lifelong Learning increase this total by several hundred.
