Programs, including revenue & expenses
DURING THE COURSE OF THE YEAR, MEMBERS CONTINUED TO REVIEW AND/OR MONITOR THE IMPACT OF FLUCTUATIONS IN THE CANADIAN DOLLAR-US DOLLAR EXCHANGE RATE AND ITS EFFECT ON COSTS TO THE CARRIERS; AND TO MAKE CHANGES TO THE CURRENCY EXCHANGE FACTOR THAT HAD BEEN DEVELOPED IN 2009 AS A RECOMMENDED VOLUNTARY GUIDELINE, TO THEIR BASIC RATES, THAT WOULD HELP TO OFFSET ANY FINANCIAL IMPACT FROM THE CURRENCY MOVEMENTS.

IN SEPTEMBER 2011 THE MEMBERS CONDUCTED AN EXCHANGE OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE CANADIAN SOYBEAN EXPORTERS ASSOCIATION ON THE SUBJECT OF EXPORTS OF THEIR PRODUCTS FROM CANADA TO ASIA AND THE IMPACT OF RISING FREIGHT RATES ON THESE PRODUCTS.

MEMBERS OF THE AGREEMENT HELD REGULAR WEEKLY OR BI-WEEKLY CONFERENCE CALLS TO DISCUSS MARKET CONDITIONS AND TO DEVELOP RECOMMENDED GUIDELINES FOR COST RECOVERY AND REVENUE IMPROVEMENT FOR INDIVIDUAL MARKET SECTORS OF THE EXPORT TRADE FROM CANADA, COVERING SUCH INDIVIDUAL COMMODITIES AS REFRIGERATED CARGO, LUMBER AND LOGS, GRAINS, ETC.

THE AGREEMENT COLLECTED MONTHLY STATISTICAL INFORMATION BASED ON FIGURES DEVELOPED BY THE PORT OF VANCOUVER, SHOWING THE VOLUMES OF CARGO BEING EXPORTED TO ASIA THROUGH THE PORTS ON THE WESTERN COAST OF CANADA. THE INFORMATION WAS COMPILED INTO A MONTHLY STATISTICAL REPORT THAT WAS CIRCULATED TO THE SHIPPING LINES, WHICH PROVIDED THE LINES WITH A BROADER VIEW OF OVERALL MARKET CONDITIONS AND TRENDS, TO ASSIST IN THEIR OWN PLANNING AND COMMERCIAL PRICING.

THE CWTSA CONTINUED TO MONITOR CHANGES IN THE PRICE OF BUNKER FUEL AT KEY PORTS AND TO APPLY THIS RESEARCH TO THE AGREEMENT'S OVERALL FORMULA IN ORDER TO DEVELOP A QUARTERLY RECOMMENDED "BUNKER CHARGE" WHICH CARRIERS COULD USE, ON A VOLUNTARY INDIVIDUAL BASIS, TO RECOVER ANY INCREASES IN SUCH COSTS AND ALSO TO REFLECT APPROPRIATE ADJUSTMENTS WHEN FUEL COSTS FELL.

THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, CARRIERS CONDUCTED A SERIES OF CONFERENCE CALLS AND MEETINGS DURING WHICH THEY EXCHANGED INFORMATION REGARDING MARKET TRENDS AND DEVELOPMENTS FOR MANY OF THE SPECIFIC INDIVIDUAL COMMODITIES THAT ARE EXPORTED FROM THE CANADA TO ASIA, THEREBY ENABLING CARRIERS TO BETTER PLAN THEIR SERVICES TO MEET THESE EXPORT REQUIREMENTS AND ALSO TO DISCUSS AND DETERMINE GUIDELINES THAT WOULD ENABLE THE CARRIERS TO IMPROVE THEIR REVENUE FOR THESE CARGOES AND THEREBY RECOVER SOME OF THE SERIOUS FINANCIAL LOSSES INCURRED AS A RESULT OF THE RECESSION.
