IN 2014, OET COMPLETED 4 MONTHS OF EXPLORATION IN THE GULF OF MEXICO AND CARIBBEAN SEA. ON BOARD NAUTILUS, THE DATA PROCESSING & VISUALIZATION LABORATORY WAS COMPLETELY RENOVATED IN ADVANCE OF THE 2014 FIELD SEASON. THE FIRST PROGRAM WAS CARRIED OUT ON THE GREAT BAHAMA BANK AND STRAITS OF FLORIDA. THIS CRUISE WAS FOLLOWED BY A SERIES OF EXPLORATORY TRANSITS IN AND AROUND THE DRY TORTUGAS INCLUDING DOCUMENTATION OF A GERMAN U-BOAT SUPPORTING A DENSE CONCENTRATION OF INVASIVE LION FISH, WHICH IS THREATENING THE SHALLOW AND DEEP WATER COMMUNITIES IN THE GULF OF MEXICO AND CARIBBEAN SEA. WE SPENT APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH CONDUCTING FOUR MISSIONS IN THE GULF OF MEXICO. TWO OF THESE PROJECTS WERE CONTINUING EFFORTS TO (1) DOCUMENT THE EFFECTS OF OIL AND GAS INPUTS INTO THE GULF ON DEEP-SEA CORAL COMMUNITIES BOTH NATURALLY AND AS A RESULT OF THE 2010 OIL SPILL FOLLOWING THE EXPLOSION OF THE DEEPWATER HORIZON DRILL RIG WITH THE ECOGIG CONSORTIUM, AND (2) STUDY THE FATE AND TRANSPORT OF GAS BUBBLES FROM NATURAL SEEPS WITH THE GISR CONSORTIUM. THE OTHER TWO WERE CONDUCTED TO INVESTIGATE A SERIES OF SHIPWRECKS THAT WERE INVOLVED IN "OPERATION DRUMBEAT." NAUTILUS CONTINUED EXPLORATION IN THE CARIBBEAN SEA, INCLUDING IN THE DEEP WATERS OF THE MESOAMERICAN REEF OFF THE COAST OF BELIZE, THE WINDWARD PASSAGE BETWEEN JAMAICA AND HAITI, THE ANEGADA PASSAGE, AND KICK'EM JENNY VOLCANO WEST OF GRENADA AND THE BARBADOS COLD SEEP PROVINCE IN TRINIDAD & TOBAGO. AS WITH ALL OF OUR PROGRAMS WE BROADCAST LIVE 24/7 VIA OUR WEBSITE WWW.NAUTILUSLIVE.ORG. IN 2014 OET LAUNCHED ITS VERY SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY STEM PROGRAM (CSP), A NEW INITIATIVE FOCUSING ITS STEM EDUCATION EFFORTS IN SELECT GEOGRAPHICAL REGIONS, ALLOWING SINGLE COMMUNITIES TO ENGAGE COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN ALL OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS. IN DECEMBER, OET HOSTED THE WORKSHOP ON TELEPRESENCE-ENABLED EXPLORATION OF THE EASTERN PACIFIC OCEAN, WHICH INCLUDED NEARLY 70 SCIENTISTS.

IN 2015, WE COMPLETED A 6 MONTH EXPEDITION IN THE GULF OF MEXICO, CARIBBEAN SEA, AND PACIFIC OCEAN, COMPRISED OF 9 ROV CRUISES AND 4 MAPPING CRUISES. PRIOR TO THE EXPEDITION, WE INSTALLED A NEW VSAT SYSTEM, WHICH SUPPORTED TELEPRESENCE, AND WE UPGRADED OUR SUCTION SAMPLING SYSTEM TO SUPPORT OUR SCIENCE MISSION. E/V NAUTILUS BEGAN THE SEASON IN THE GULF OF MEXICO, TRANSITED THROUGH THE PANAMA CANAL, AND EXPLORED FROM THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS TO CANADA, FOCUSING PRIMARILY ON GEOLOGICAL AND BIOLOGICAL EXPLORATION OF THESE POORLY UNDERSTOOD OCEAN REGIONS. THE CRUISES INCLUDED COMMUNITY -DRIVEN BASIC EXPLORATION AND APPLIED EXPLORATION CRUISES DIRECTED BY INDIVIDUALS OR GROUPS OF SCIENTISTS. BOTH TYPES TOOK ADVANTAGE OF OUR TELEPRESENCE CAPABILITIES AND EXTENSIVE EDUCATION AND OUTREACH NETWORK TO REACH BROAD AUDIENCES.

THE E/V NAUTILUS BEGAN OFF THE COAST OF VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA AND AFTER UNDERTAKING A COMPLEX, TWO-VESSEL OPERATION WITH A CABLE SHIP, SAILED SOUTH EXPLORING IN THE CASCADIA MARGIN OFF OREGON, THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AND SANTA BARBARA BASINS, AND THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA BORDERLANDS. OET UNDERTOOK BOTH BASIC AND APPLIED EXPLORATION OPERATIONS THROUGHOUT THE SEASON AND COLLABORATED WITH SEVERAL NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARIES, INCLUDING CHANNEL ISLANDS, CORDELL BANK, MONTEREY BAY, OLYMPIC COAST, AND GREATER FARALLONES. IN ADDITION TO BIOLOGICAL AND GEOLOGICAL EXPLORATION, CONTINUED ON SCH O OET ALSO EXPERIMENTED WITH NEW SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGIES, AND EXPLORED MARITIME HERITAGE SITES.
