Medical education 2010/2011 was again a year when the society excelled in providing a world-class program of over 420 meetings and events across the UK and overseas in a wide range of medical specialties. The Academic Department provides a broad range of educational activities. Our main aim is to address the continuing professional learning needs of doctors and dentists, but we increasingly provide educational opportunities for medical students, and for allied healthcare professionals. We also continue a dialogue with veterinary surgeons about matters that overlap both our areas of concern. We seek both to educate and also to explicitly drive up doctor's performance standards by enabling the highest quality knowledge and skills development to ensure the highest standards of patient safety, which in turn provides public benefit. To facilitate these aims, the Society contains 58 different sections, each representing a medical specialty, and each pursuing the RSM's strategic aims at a Section level. The Society itself ensures cross-coverage and external liaison.
